外国人の知人が「茶室の入り口はなぜあんなに小さいのか」というので、私はしたり顔で「刀を持って入れないように。茶道はもともと武士のアートだったからです」と答えた。彼女はおお、と呟いてメモをとった。

茶道に興味があるのではない。高校の文化祭で茶道部の点てたお茶を飲んだことくらいしかない。この知りあいが「今度お茶に行く」というから、予習しておいたのだ。

知りあいの（お箸の国の人でない）外国人たちがあまりに正確に箸を遣い、同席する日本人の手つきをじっと見るものだから、仕方なく自分の箸使いを矯正した。
箸使いの綺麗な人に指導を依頼した。食事のたびに地味に努力した。正しい方法を会得して間がないので、長時間箸を使っていると中指が攣る。

日本人、あるいは日本にきて長期間経っている外国人が相手なら、私は平気で日本文化に対する無知を晒してにこにこ笑っている。畳の縁も踏んじゃう。

でも、今年日本に来ました、みたいな人に対しては、ちょっと無理をしてでも、自分が「正しい日本人」であるかのように振る舞う。
見栄だ。何に対して張っている見栄かは、よくわからないのだけれど。

もしかしたら、あの気の良い日本好きの外国人たちは、私が「正しい日本人」のふりをするためにけっこう頑張っていることを、ほんとうは知っているのかもしれないな、と思う。そうして、日本的なものを見てキャーキャー喜ぶガイジンの役回りを楽しんでいるのかもしれない。
