去年まで、近所の大学で臨時雇いの学内SEをやっていた。
引っ越した今でも、その研究室の教授から「相談しながら作業してもらいたいから、うちの大学まで来て」（新幹線で！）というメールが来る。
難しいことをするわけではないから、もっと近くにいる人を雇えば良いと思う。

そう言うと教授は、
「やりたいことを話してわかってもらうのがめんどくさい。わかってくれないし。あと、ほんとのエンジニアの人はよくわかんないこと言って怖い」
と言う。
悪うございましたね、ほんとのエンジニアじゃなくって。

この教授は内気なのではない。むしろ開放的すぎる人格だ。
それでも怖いというのは、たぶん軽いテクノフォビアなのだろう。日常的にPCを操作したりブログを書いたりしていても、自分がハンドリングできない領域に入った途端、理不尽な忌避感が作動する。

こんなにもみんなが機械を使っているのに、けっこう多くの人の中に、「よくわからない機械への忌避感」がしっかりと根を張っている。だから「よくわからない機械を駆使する人」もついでに避けられてしまう。

IT業界の人が想定する専門性のはるか手前で、彼らは「いやだな」「こわいな」と感じる。
私が件の教授にとってOKだったのは、「難しいこと言わない文系の人」として認識されたためだ。

SEになる人は、とくに売りになる技術がないんだったら、「専門家じゃない感じで相手に安心感を与える」という路線を考えても良いかもしれない。

うちの職場にもこういう人いる。正規表現知らないけど「難しいこと言わない文系の人」として認識されていて明らかに客受けがいい。
